Colorado snow for Thanksgiving Weekend
The first truly widespread snow for the state of Colorado is headed our way. Not a lot has changed with the forecast from the snippets we've given you thus far. In this blog, we'll focus on timing, totals and impacts of this storm. We'll also outline some national travel trouble spots for folks heading home this weekend. Let's time it out A strong cold front will slide south Thursday afternoon bringing increasing clouds and colder temps for Thanksgiving. By sunset Thursday, snow showers will s

Banded snow event means boom potential on the table with Friday's snow chance
Looking over morning data for today's snow event looks interesting enough that we thought we'd offer a quick update on the forecast as things get under way across Northern Colorado this morning, and eventually across the greater Denver metro area and points south. While nothing has changed all that dramatically from our update last night , guidance has been trending a bit wetter overall, and confidence in th

Thursday PM update: Chance of snow on Friday
Things remain on track for tomorrow's snow chance, as another quick-moving system will bring some snow to the state Friday and Friday evening. For most cities up and down the Front Range the snow chance will be in the 50% range with this system, with higher probabilities for the foothills west of Denver and Boulder. The timeline for the Denver metro area shows snow chances increasing by late morning Friday, and continuing through the evening before tapering off before midnight. The commute m
Colorado Fires
Hundreds of homes lost as devastating fires continue; snow and cold arrive tomorrow and not a moment too soon
All High Wind Warnings have finally been dropped after a day featuring hour after hour of relentless wind and gusts to 100 mph along the Front Range. Still, gusty winds continue along the Front Range and urban corridor, and will do so through the middle of the night before dying down toward morning. A look at wind reports from NCAR shows gusts have dropped off from 90 mph in the 40 mph range, with sustained winds subsiding as well. We are headed in the right direction, but several more difficu
State of the Atmosphere
The State of the Atmosphere: Sunday, April 18th, 2021
With plenty of sunshine and temperatures breaking the 50-degree mark across the metro area this afternoon, today's feeling very nice after a chilly and wet week. The mild weather will be short-lived, however, as another rather potent cold front will swing through northern Colorado on Monday, and bring with it another round of rain and snow to much of the state. Tomorrow's highs will depend largely on the timing of the front, but it looks to push into northern Colorado pretty early in the day

Latest snowfall forecast and discussion for Denver, Northeast Colorado
We're now day of, and models continue to differ on how the next 24 hours or so will pan out across Northeast Colorado. Details around snow totals aside, expect rain and snow showers to increase through the afternoon across northeast Colorado, with locally heavy rain and snow possible through the evening. The HRRR model, which has done quite well with snow events in recent weeks, has trended snowier this morning after keeping the heaviest snow well north of the Denver area in overnight runs. It
Snowfall Totals
Snowfall totals and a look ahead to the remainder of the week and next chance of snow
While we will continue to see snow showers off and on today, the bulk of the accumulating snow from our most recent event has come to an end. Areas that see heavier showers today could see another 0.5" to 1.5" or so, but snow will be less impactful during the daytime hours. Some models show better snow shower activity returning this evening to the foothills, so something we'll need to watch for. The HRRR has another T - 3" for areas west of Boulder after 5pm today, we'll see if it materializes o

Thursday AM update: Storm track wobbles continue, latest probabilities for significant snowfall across northern Colorado
We continue to track a potentially significant snowfall event on the way for north-central and northeast Colorado this weekend. While widespread totals in excess of one foot of snow are possible, if even likely this weekend, there remain some caveats to that depending on exact storm track, which this morning remains in question. As for timing, look for rain and show showers to continue off and on through Friday evening. These aren't expected to amount to much, but enough to feel unsettled at t

What has overnight data revealed about Colorado's weekend snowstorm: Wednesday update
Data is in from the overnight and morning and shows little change to our continued focus on a significant snowfall event this weekend for Northern Colorado (especially the foothills), Eastern Wyoming, and Nebraska. Let us take a moment to make one thing clear, we are focused on the weekend event in this post but there are snow and rain chances before we even get to the main storm; rain/snow chances increase now through Friday. If need be this will be addressed in a post later Wednesday that wil

Monday PM update: Impressive snow totals for some so far, more on the way
More snow is in the forecast even as some areas have already seen more than their fair share. As we opined on Saturday, "the Boulder area the most likely to "feel" like a good storm from this one" and I'd say this morning that this was an understatement –– some parts of Boulder county are approaching 20" of snow as of midday Monday. While others haven't seen much accumulate, even parts of the Denver area have done quite well. Our station, located in Denver West has picked up nearly 7" of snow

Another round of snow showers for the evening commute
Today's snowfall is likely to not be as widespread as Monday, but where we do see snow today it could come at poor timing for the evening commute. Last night we showed the NAM model which showed the focus of today's snow northwest of Denver. Today we see the HRRR showing a similar look -- with a swath of snow from Boulder across the western Denver suburbs, then southeast across Parker and the Palmer Divide. The HRRR has handled our last several systems pretty well, and so far today has been pre
