Double-digit snowfall totals, for some the first in decades, falls across Front Range before weekend warming trend
Things are going to melt quickly, but we have a lot to melt. Let's start with a look at snowfall reports from this latest storm, and then we will look at the warming temperatures for the week ahead. First, snowfall reports and observations were compiled for the following maps, and for some locations this was the first double-digit snowfall in a long time. Colorado weather: Next winter storm(s) is on the way, will deliver snow to much of the state
We're tracking more accumulating snow for much of the state Friday and into the weekend as more wet weather moves our way to end the week and our unsettled pattern continues. For the urban corridor that means an uptick in snow chances Friday, then again Friday night and Saturday before odds drop off Saturday night. Temperatures will cool into the low 40s Friday, and hover around freezing on Saturday with that off and on snowfall. The forecast remains a bit messy, even as we could see some fo

Colorado snow for Thanksgiving Weekend
The first truly widespread snow for the state of Colorado is headed our way. Not a lot has changed with the forecast from the snippets we've given you thus far. In this blog, we'll focus on timing, totals and impacts of this storm. We'll also outline some national travel trouble spots for folks heading home this weekend. Let's time it out A strong cold front will slide south Thursday afternoon bringing increasing clouds and colder temps for Thanksgiving. By sunset Thursday, snow showers will s

Colorado weather: Waiting for the pattern change, Thanksgiving week outlook
It's kind of like when you have trouble getting the engine started. We've had some flashes of life here and there with the weather, but outside of that, a LOT of downtime. We discussed in our last SOTA post that we're starting to shed into a pattern change. It's still looking like we'll see a decent storm for the mountains starting Sunday and lasting into Monday. Model data the past few days has had some trouble pinning down the forecast for the front range and lower elevations. The big picture

All roads lead to... Southern Colorado? Models continue to wobble ahead of incoming rain and snow
As we've been discussing the last couple of days, the Mile High City may not only have a temperature problem (re snow) but may also have a storm track problem. Models do continue to wobble as we head into now-forecast time, but overall bias remains south... with plentiful moisture for those that end up in a direct hit, but for Denver that could ultimately end up just out of reach. We'll know soon enough! First, we trust this won't be a complete miss for Denver. In fact, in most circumstances w

Denver area weather: Today's warmth will be replaced by cold and a chance of rain and snow by tonight
Another day with awesome temperatures in the forecast across the area before our next change arrives this evening and Thursday. Highs along the urban corridor will again take aim at the 70°F mark today before a sharp cooldown arrives Thursday, with highs just in the low to mid 30s in the forecast. Here is a look at the latest hourly planner for Denver: Gusty winds, rain, and a bit of snow will accompany the cool down. The chance of precipitation will increase after sunset tonight with the

Midweek system to bring rain and snow to Colorado, details elusive
We continue to track the next round of wet weather on the way to Colorado tomorrow and Thursday. Models remain pretty bullish on precipitation totals, but details in where exactly the heaviest precipitation will fall, and how much falls as rain vs snow remain difficult to pin down. A look at global ensemble models show a couple of things. The GEFS, below, shows good agreement now between the 30 ensembl

Incredible banded snowfall event comes to an end, map of latest snowfall totals
What an event! We've been discussing internally that we really can't recall a setup like this producing the widespread heavy snow that we've seen over the last 24 hours. While snow events along a northwest flow such as this very often produce boom snowfall (I wrote a horrible ode to this a few years back ), it's usually over a much narrower geography, and to see so much of Denver/Monument/Colorado Springs get buried is als

Significant change arrives, update on Monday's impact of ice and snow across Northeast Colorado
No doubt your Super Bowl hangover is made a bit tougher with a significant temperature drop, ice, and snow in parts of Northern Colorado by early Monday, with a growing impact during the day. Be careful this morning; ice is already an issue! Reports of freezing drizzle, sleet, and snow received by Monday morning match the forecast we published Sunday giving

September Snow: Perspective and Context
Matt Makens is a member of the Pinpoint Weather Team. He presents forecasts nightly on Channel 2. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "I remember it used to snow all the time in September!" Perhaps you have thought the same? Let's check that hypothesis and give some context to September's snowfall history for the Front Range. At the surface, this memory isn't all that wrong. Let's dig deeper. I'll begin by showing you the September snowfall tota

Stay Weather Aware Friday, Weekend Rain and Snow
As a cold front approaches (that we mentioned in our last post) Friday there is the increased likelihood for severe weather, including the Denver area. The overall dynamics have come together for many areas to have large to potentially damaging thunderstorms Friday, particularly the sheer environment. The varying wind throughout the lower and middle atmosphere will support rotating thunderstorms starting in the midday near Denver, and that area of rotational availability moves east later in the

Heavy Rainfall to be Wednesday's Storm Threat
A little different variety of thunderstorms will push through the area Wednesday: heavy rainers. Tuesday evening still may see a storm, the strongest of which will be over the plains, but the storm impact Tuesday is lower than what is possible Wednesday. Wednesday morning starts with sunshine and quickly warming temperatures into the upper 70s. As clouds increase into the afternoon, thunderstorms will grow quickly. Into the later afternoon and early evening, the storms will be able to produce

Top 10 Event Clears, Freeze Warnings Tonight
A top 10 latest snowfall event is wrapping up as the storm system clears the state after leaving nearly two feet of snow on parts of the Palmer Divide. For Denver, 3.4 inches puts the late season snow on the top 10 list for biggest this late in the season. The largest late-season event was in 1950 when a two-day total on the 26th and 27th came in at over 10 inches. Compare this to the over 19 inch total from Black Forest and over 13 inch total from Monument (most in 24 hours since 2006 and 201

A Red Flag Warning is in effect through 6pm for most of eastern Colorado, where fire danger remains high under dry conditions and gusty winds: A Blizzard Watch has been issued for the Palmer Divide and areas east/southeast of Denver. This watch goes into effect late Thursday night and extends through Friday morning. This will be

Tuesday P.M. Update: Wednesday/Thursday Snowfall Forecast
We hope everyone enjoyed what turned into a rather mild February day across the Denver area, with downtown Denver hitting 49° degrees shortly after 2pm today. Tomorrow winter returns, with another chance for snow in the forecast Wednesday afternoon through Friday, with more snow and cold possible for the weekend. The timing of our next round of snow – which we've been monitoring closely since Sunday – could spell trouble for Denver's evening commute on Wednesday. The timing for the onset of sno

Storm on Track, Keeps Best Precipitation South of Denver
As we discussed yesterday, another storm will begin to affect Colorado today through Thursday bringing at least a slight chance of rain and snow to Denver. The eventual track of this system was the biggest uncertainty yesterday, as only a slight shift would mean a greater or lesser chance for shower activity in Denver and the northern Front Range communities. 18z model runs yesterday trended south, away from Denver, and the 0z runs last night did little to change this idea. We'll stick with coo
