Colorado weather: Winter weather possible late this week
Hey everybody! Finally going to see a more favorable pattern for rain and snow across the front range later this week. It looks like a slow moving... blob... of unsettled weather is on the docket come Thursday and Friday – and by blob, I mean this thing: You can see it's not coming through all that organized, it's pretty far south and there doesn't seem to be a whole lot to get it to spin up a bit more and cause more of a ruckus. Never fear, though! It does have something working in our favo

Colorado weather: More wind, mountain snow, and fire danger this weekend
Heading into this weekend... and almost a carbon copy of last weekend , a potent storm system is expected to ride a strong push from the Pacific jet stream, keeping most of the core energy north of Colorado. With a similar storm set up, similar impacts are expected to move through the state. We'll see wind and fire danger ramp up, especially south of I-70 on Saturday, heavy mountain snow picking up Saturday night and throughout Sunday, with a chan

Colorado weather: Waiting for the pattern change, Thanksgiving week outlook
It's kind of like when you have trouble getting the engine started. We've had some flashes of life here and there with the weather, but outside of that, a LOT of downtime. We discussed in our last SOTA post that we're starting to shed into a pattern change. It's still looking like we'll see a decent storm for the mountains starting Sunday and lasting into Monday. Model data the past few days has had some trouble pinning down the forecast for the front range and lower elevations. The big picture

Do keep in mind that we will see chances for thunderstorms increase throughout the weekend, particularly southern Colorado and parts of the high country that will have some rain and snow. I'll have some snow and rainfall data here in a moment. For Denver, overall a quiet pattern continues. Here's a planner for the next three days. So, for Denver the trend is pretty darn quiet. Colorado weather: First weekend of September will be a hot one along the Front Range
Ah September... when the temperature finally starts to drop and chatter about when we might see the season's first snow becomes a nightly routine around the dinner table. In theory anyway. The first weekend of September this year will be anything but fall-like around here with highs in the low to mid 90s through Labor Day along the urban corridor. While it looks like we'll fall a few degrees short of the record high today (98°F, 2019) and tomorrow (100°F, 2019), we'll still be about 10°F ab

Hurricane Hilary forecast to move inland over southern California as a tropical storm, bring years worth of rain with it
As we discussed yesterday , the desert southwest is making preparations for a rare event as hurricane Hilary (will be tropical storm Hilary) is set to move inland over the weekend and into next week bringing with it in some cases more rain over a three day period than many of these places will typically see over two years. > The sun rises on #Hurricane [https://twitter.com/

More mountain snow on the way; snow showers and even some rain in the forecast for Northeast Colorado
A week ago we anticipated a much different end to this week than what looks like will be our reality, at least when it comes to temperatures. We showed this chart the other day, but felt it was worth reiterating. The top pink box shows what this model had for high temperatures a week ago in Denver for today/tomorrow/Friday, with the bottom box showing the pretty big shift in recent days to the outlook. From teens and 20s for highs, in previous updates - the past several have been much warmer.

Colorado weather: Heavy snow for the northern mountains, occasional showers across the plains
Happy Friday everyone! As we've been discussing all week, the pattern is an unsettled one. This remains true as we head into the weekend. Today will feature areas of generally light snow across Northeast Colorado, with even some mixed precipitation or rain mixing in at times. Little accumulation is expected from these showers along the urban corridor and Eastern Plains, but something to be on the lookout for if you are out and about today. Record temperatures forecast across Colorado today under September heat wave
Record heat in September has become something of a staple in recent years. Even last year, which saw one of the earliest snowfalls on record in Denver, boasted some extreme September heat as well. Push of monsoonal moisture will increase flash flood risk to end week, begin weekend
The outlook from this week's SOTA held up pretty well, with the greatest rainfall coverage so far this week parked over the higher terrain of Colorado and the Palmer Divide. Yesterday featured some better storm coverage for Denver – missing many of us on the west side of the metro area, but some good 0.25 to 0.8" totals across portions of the city. A look at rainfall totals from the last three days, shows some areas of good precipitation, especially along the Front Range and Palmer Divide, b

Weekend outlook, and a look ahead to next week

Season to date DIA has now recorded 80.2" of snow, an impressive feat, especially given the backdrop of La Niña conditions this winter, and his pushed this season into the number 9 spot of snowiest seasons on record for the city. Yesterday's precipitation ended up a bit north of where some models had it projected, but overall was pretty well captured in the data. Weekend outlook includes some rain and snow across the state
As we near the weekend, there is a system to move through the region Saturday and will deliver some rain and snow to Colorado, but for what increasingly looks like for only isolated areas.
