For those of you in Colorado, a nice break in the action for a couple of days,
but more winter is on the horizon, particularly for the high country and perhaps
northeast Colorado too. If you missed it, here is a link to snowfall totals from
across the state from the latest storm, as well as a map of season-to-date
totals for Colorado:

Nationally, the pattern will promote more good snow across much of the western
CONUS over the next couple of weeks, with what looks like another very active
pattern setting up for California here as we head into the latter half of
February. 

Below is a look at the 6 - 10 day outlook for temperatures (top) and
precipitation (bottom). Warmth is focused over the southeastern United States,
coldest north and west, with an overall wet pattern in place for the CONUS
(details aside). 

For Colorado we'll see a number of storms move through over the next week+. The
first will move through over the weekend and bring a round of measurable
snowfall to the northern and central mountains. For areas east of the hills we
expect your weekend to remain mostly dry. We have a slight chance of showers in
the forecast for the urban corridor on Sunday, but that's about it.

The next, potentially more significant system, is set to move through during the
middle of next week. For the mountains this looks like another good round of
snow. For the plains it looks like snow is a possibility, but data isn't all
that convincing, and it looks like models want to pull the low pretty far north
which could greatly reduce snow potential east of the hills south of Wyoming or
so. 

At 500mb we see a big trough carving into the west by the early part of next
week, moving over Colorado on Wednesday, and then ejecting northeast. For snow
across the greater Denver area, and in particular areas south and east of
Denver, we'd want this low to "dig" a bit further south than indicated here.
This track would promote a good snowstorm for Wyoming, Nebraska, and the
Dakotas, but would limit impacts for Eastern Colorado and Kansas. 

At the surface, this is evident. Good mountain snow, quite of a bit of snow
north, but the low (currently) is too far north for much snow across eastern
Colorado (that could change). 

If we look at snowfall totals for the next week across the CONUS from the
European ensemble mean model, we see it's got a pretty northerly look as well.
Plentiful snow for the west coast and intermountain west, then again across the
northern high plains. The mean snowfall for Denver next week is somewhere in the
1 - 3" range, with greatest totals north. Let's see how that trends as we get
through the weekend. 

And finally, the timeline but for precipitation, with much of the U.S. seeing a
wet period over the next seven days, with perhaps some of the driest locations
being where we need quite a bit of drought help still in Southeast Colorado,
western Kansas, and the Panhandles.
