You know it. You've observed it. This December has been light on snow and heavy on warmth for the city. December is likely to end within the top 5 warmest and top 10 least snowy on record for the Denver Area. There will be a chance to cool off Christmas Day with some isolated snow/rain to move through, too, but temperatures are still warmer than average and there isn't a lot of moisture to fall.
We will discuss the moisture potential in a moment, but what is noteworthy weatherwise this Christmas will be the warmth for Tuesday. Here's a look at the temperature forecast for Stapleton (Central Park) this week, note the high tomorrow.
IF we do record 60° tomorrow, a bit of a stretch though, it'll be only the 10th 60-degree day since 1948 for Christmas Eve; the last in 2019 and all others between 1950 and 1972. For Colorado Springs, only five Christmas Eves hit the 60s+ since 1894 the forecast for the Springs is shown here.
As far as the warmest 12/24s on record: Stapleton hit 70° in 1955 (Colorado Springs also hit 70 in 1955), we are extremely unlikely to get anywhere close to that mark this year.
Okay, so we know it'll be warm the next two days, is there any chance of a White Christmas? - Lloyd Christmas thinks a one in a million chance is something to get excited about, and our odds are better than that. If you think a White Christmas is seeing flakes of snow falling and you don't care about accumulation you can have some hope - although we could see some rain drops instead considering the warmth. This chart shows the hourly chances of moisture broken into rain, snow, etc. Note, the chance for rain is higher than that of snow for the city.
And for Colorado Springs, a similar idea:
Okay, let's bring more folks into the fold.
For today and Christmas Eve, it'll be warm across the metro areas with some areas of light/moderate snow in the High Country. The may also be a brief rain shower on the Front Range or Plains but the odds are quite low. This animation will walk us through any showers the next few days.
As far as snowfall totals in that time, it's not a lot but some freshies for the skiers.
From that, we can see with the heavier snow totals that travel in the San Juans (Wolf Creek Pass) and perhaps Berthoud and Rabbit Ears Passes may have some slick spots, but the overall travel impact into Christmas is low.
For travelers, an overall good outlook this year. For snow lovers, better send a last minute letter to Santa.
We wish you a Merry Christmas!
