Texas Update, October 28, 2016

During the course of the past week, the state has really suffered in the moisture department, especially those in west/central Texas, with a bit better moisture across eastern portions of the state:

Observed Precipitation the Past Week

Here is this week's latest drought report showing another increase in the drought coverage of the state, up to 35% of Texas now is in a drought.

USDA Drought Monitor

You can see that the current drought monitor has increased the percentage of us under moderate and severe drought. Those areas primarily remain to the east, but the entire coverage of drought will likely increase going through the next couple of months.

The best news is in the short term. The precipitation outlook is best for north and west-central Texas the next 14 days. A bit of tropical moisture will be flowing through the next two weeks, or so.

Weather5280 Accumulated Precipitation

The precipitation forecast accumulating through Sunday, November 6th (particularly the 2nd through the 5th) clearly favors some moisture nearing 1 to 2 inches. Eastern sections will likely remain the driest as has been the recent trend.

This is thanks to a disturbance in the western Caribbean (yellow X below), which while at this point isn't a threat for development, will need to be kept eye on as it eventually moves into the Gulf:

We don't anticipate that flow of moisture to continue, however. The two weeks that follow this will likely not have as widespread precipitation. The storm pattern likely shifts to favor the U.S. northern tier of states, not our neck of the woods.
