As we teased in our last update, a break from the HEAT is on the way this week. Eventually.
Not before another couple of days of hot weather, however, and this following Denver's hottest day in years on Sunday with a new record high for the date of 102°F (old record for the date was 98°F set in 2022). Ouch!
Highs will be in the mid to upper 90s through about Wednesday before we finally knock temperatures back into the 80s for at least a few days, and feel a meaningful respite from the record heat.
Here is the latest blend of models temperature forecast for the Denver area, with a rather nice looking 80°F forecast for Thursday at this time!
How much moisture we are likely to see remains a bit hard to say. There remain differences in guidance, with the Euro still looking drier overall than the American GFS model through next weekend, but also the convective nature of summer storms means there ultimately is a bit of game of chance – do you end up under the cell, or does it pass a few miles north or south of you.
Storm chances overall will be up this week though, with about a 30% chance of storms today and tomorrow – even with the heat – and then better odds as we head toward Wednesday and the latter half of the week.
With a good cool down arriving Wednesday night to the region, Thursday may shake out to be our best chance for widespread showers across the state this week. Some guidance shows a round of early morning showers and storms for the urban corridor on Thursday, a brief break, then increased rain coverage Thursday evening as well.
If we look at the 10 day outlook from the European ensemble, we see most members (each row along the y-axis is an ensemble member) has measurable precipitation forecast by Thursday/Friday in Denver, with a handful of healthy 1"+ totals through the period.
The GFS operational model remains even more bullish, with anywhere from 1 - 3" for forecast for much of the state through next Sunday night:
The long and short of it is – a few more days of heat on the way, and with that poor air quality given the ongoing fires – but rain chances gradually increase through midweek, and a nice cooldown is forecast for the region by Thursday.
Hurricane Debby
Hurricane Debby made landfall in the Florida Big Bend Region this morning and will gradually track north/northeast over the next couple of days. While the hurricane status may be short-lived, the anticipated rainfall from this storm over the southeast U.S. will be tremendous. Folks with travel plans to the region should plan accordingly, and those with loved ones in the area please encourage them to follow all the latest from the National Hurricane Center, and follow any guidance offered by local officials.
Here is the latest rainfall forecast from the WPC this morning. Incredible.
As for our rain chances for later this week, we'll keep tabs on things and pass along updates as needed!
